IAFT-2 — Reasons for Appealing a Home Office Decision
Used to tell the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) why you think the Home Office decision you are appealing is wrong, when the tribunal asks you for more information after you have appealed by post or email using form IAFT-1. Introduced in May 2025 — it is a different form from the pre-2025 out-of-country IAFT-2 appeal form, which has been withdrawn and consolidated into IAFT-1.
This is a reference summary, not the official form (IAFT-2).

Who uses this form
Appellants who have already lodged an immigration or asylum appeal with the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) — usually by post or email using form IAFT-1 — and have then been asked by the tribunal to provide more information about their reasons for appealing.
When to use it
Only complete this form if the tribunal has asked you to explain why you think the Home Office decision you are appealing is wrong. It does not start an appeal — submit form IAFT-1 (or appeal online) first, within the appeal deadline, and use IAFT-2 when the tribunal requests more information.
Where to file
First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber) — return it by post or email following the instructions in the tribunal's request. Tribunal contact: contactia@justice.gov.uk, telephone 0300 123 1711.
Court fee
No separate fee for this form. The appeal fee is dealt with when you appeal with IAFT-1 — £82 (decision without a hearing) or £144 (with a hearing) — and the tribunal contacts you after you send the IAFT-1 form to tell you how to pay.
Fee remission
You do not pay the appeal fee if you get asylum support from the Home Office, get legal aid, or are under 18 and get benefits or housing from your local council. Otherwise you can apply for Help with Fees (online or on the paper form) if you receive certain benefits, have little or no savings, or are on a low income.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing this form with the old out-of-country IAFT-2 appeal form — that form was withdrawn and consolidated into IAFT-1; this IAFT-2 is only for giving your reasons after the tribunal asks
Trying to use IAFT-2 to start an appeal — it does not lodge an appeal, so the strict IAFT-1 deadline still applies
Not answering the specific question the tribunal asked — explain why the Home Office decision is wrong, not just that you disagree with it
Leaving out your appeal reference and Home Office reference numbers, so the tribunal cannot match the form to your case
Sending the completed form to the Home Office instead of back to the tribunal
Ignoring the timescale stated in the tribunal's request — replying late can mean your appeal is decided without your reasons being considered
