Do not file this page. Always download and submit the current official form from the issuing authority.
Who uses this form
Claimants (individuals or businesses) starting a civil claim in the County Court or High Court. Can be used as a litigant in person or through a solicitor.
When to use it
Use this form when issuing a claim for money owed, breach of contract, personal injury, property damage, or other civil remedies. Do not use for small claims online (use MCOL instead) or specialist proceedings.
Where to file
County Court hearing centre or by post to the CCBC (County Court Business Centre) in Northampton for bulk claims. High Court claims go to the relevant court office.
Court fee
Sliding scale: £35 (up to £300); £70 (£300.01–£500); £115 (£500.01–£1,000); £205 (£1,000.01–£1,500); £455 (£3,000.01–£5,000); £610 (£5,000.01–£10,000); £910 (£10,000.01–£15,000); up to £10,000 for claims over £200,000
Fee remission
Apply for Help with Fees (EX160) if you receive certain benefits or have low income. Fee remission can reduce the issue fee to zero.
Common mistakes to avoid
Leaving the statement of truth unsigned or undated — the claim will be returned
Writing inadequate particulars of claim: state the facts clearly, the legal basis, and the remedy sought
Getting the defendant's full legal name wrong (for companies, use the registered name from Companies House)
Omitting pre-action correspondence when the protocol requires it
Issuing in the wrong court — claims over £100,000 should normally go to the High Court
