EX160 — Apply for Help with Fees
Application form to reduce or waive court fees if you receive qualifying benefits or have low disposable income. Covers most HMCTS fees in civil, family, and tribunal proceedings.
This is a reference summary, not the official form (EX160).
Do not file this page. Always download and submit the current official form from the issuing authority.
Who uses this form
Individuals (not businesses) who need to pay a court or tribunal fee and either receive means-tested benefits (automatic remission) or have low disposable income (income-based remission).
When to use it
Complete before or at the time you pay the court fee. Submit together with the court form requiring the fee. You cannot usually claim a refund after paying a fee without a remission application.
Where to file
Submit with the court form to the relevant court or tribunal. Alternatively, apply online at gov.uk/help-with-court-fees.
Court fee
Free to apply.
Common mistakes to avoid
Applying after already paying the fee — remission must be applied for before or at the same time as the fee
Not enclosing evidence of income/benefits when required — the application will be refused without it
Businesses cannot use this form — it is for individuals only
Completing the form for the wrong court/tribunal — each fee on a separate application
Forgetting to sign the declaration at the end
