When to use this tool

Use when administering an estate to understand the upfront costs of applying for probate and whether inheritance tax is likely to apply. Court probate fees must be paid before the grant is issued, so executors need to plan how to fund them. This tool uses the current fee scale (£300 for estates over £5,000) and 2026/27 IHT thresholds.

Include all assets: property, bank accounts, investments, vehicles, personal possessions. Do not deduct debts or liabilities here.

If yes, and the property passes to direct descendants, the Residence Nil-Rate Band (up to £175,000) may apply.

Each office copy costs £1.50. Banks, financial institutions, and the Land Registry may each require a copy. 3–6 copies is typical.
